Comicpalooza 2013 - Houston, Texas
Comicpalooza 2013 was this weekend in Houston, Texas. It was a bigger event than last year's with bigger name guest in the comic, film and television industry. Just to name a few comic artist who were there was Chris Claremont (X-men), Bob Layton (X-men, Iron Man), Geroge Perez (JLA/Avengers crossover) and Sam De La Rosa (Venom and Spider-Man). Film/television guest were Danny Trejo (Machete, Predators), Peter Mayhew (Star Wars), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious, Resident Evil) and Patrick Stewart (Xmen, Star Trek).
Comicpalooza 2013, held at the George R. Brown convention center in Houston. shared the floor space with Galacticon III of Battlestar Galactica. Of course, it's not all Battlestar Galactica — the show was big and featured tons of other sci-fi actors and personalities, including Danny Trejo, who is essentially badassery personified.
Comicpalooza 2013 won't be confused with big hitters like the San Diego Comic-Con or the New York Comic Con, both of which attracted more than 100,000 attendees last year. Comicpalooza also won't be confused with its origins in an Alamo Drafthouse lobby just five years ago. The event's transformation from a few hundred fans getting their comic books signed into a full-fledged convention of 20,000 at the George R. Brown Convention Center shows the incredible potential of this metropolis while other cities are stuck on impulse power. More than 500,000 square feet, over 700 hours of programming (there are lots of overlapping events) and a more diverse range of topics than any convention this side of South by Southwest.
Big? Diverse? That sounds familiar. And the expected 20,000 attendees (double last year's attendance) is only a stepping stone to a projected 50,000-75,000 people per year once Comicpalooza fully matures.
